2003- Restoration of the Dolling grave

In the north-east part of the grave yard is tombstone of Edmund Dolling who died as a result of self-administered variolation – a dangerous precursor of vaccination – in which smallpox serum was used instead of of milder cowpox serum used later by Edward Jenner. The headstone reads:

In memory of Edmund Dolling
who dyed of ye smallpox
which he designedly took,
Sept 6th 1737 aged 21 years.
Stop passenger, my fate deplore
take warning by my tomb
and never like me tempt ye Lord
least thou shouldst have my doom
